TEENAGERS from across the North-East have been showing they are a cut above the rest.

Ten colleges took part in the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists' Regional Hair and Beauty Competition at the Federation Brewery, in Gateshead, yesterday.

It involved 300 students and 300 models, with hundreds of young people watching.

College students took part in rounds including sections on avante garde, alternative, and cut and blow dry, as well as nail art, body art and a team event.

Lindsay Deswert, competition director for the North-East is a hairdressing lecturer at New College Durham.

She said: "They have had a fantastic day as it is a massive event. It is good for the students to do these competitions because they work towards it for their NVQ. It is a good thing to have on their CVs."

South Tyneside College won eight of the 14 categories. Other winners included Yorkshire Coast College, Northumberland College, York College and New College Durham.

They will travel to Manchester on April 18 to take part in the national competition.
