THE last Challenger II tanks to be stationed at a North Yorkshire military base left last week after their brigade was given a new role.

All 58 of the battle tanks belonging to the Queen's Royal Lancers have now left Catterick Garrison.

The tanks were divided between other regiments after the Lancers' role as a combat brigade was changed to one of reconnaissance during Army restructuring announced before Christmas.

The brigade is now in training to become a rapid response unit for any conflicts or other tasks around the globe.

Lt Col Andrew Hughes, the Lancers' commanding officer, said: "While we are very sad to see the Challenger main battle tanks go, our move to formation reconnaissance poses a new challenge which we are already enjoying.

"It also represents a new era in the life of the Queen's Royal Lancers."
