Saltburn promendade is to get a makeover in a drive to attract more tourists.

A cash injection of £750,000 will bring significant improvements to the seafront after securing Government funding.

The pier and cliff lift, along with the amusement arcades and holiday chalets, will benefit from feature lighting from dusk until midnight.

The promenade will have visitor gardens, art features and sensory gardens with disabled access.

The aim is to increase the profile of the area, improve visitors' experiences and make facilities more attractive to potential users.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, through Groundwork South Tees, will start work in the area on Monday.

The major part of the investment comes after the Tees Valley Coastal Arc, a partnership between Redcar and Hartlepool councils, secured £600,000 from the Government's regional development agency, One NorthEast.

There is also a further £150,000 from the council, its Neighbourhood Renewal Fund allocation and its project partners, including the Learning and Skills Council, the Wise Group, the Friends of Saltburn Pier and Saltburn Pier Entertainments.

The council's cabinet member for economic development, Coun Vera Moody, said: "These enhancements will be a big boost for Saltburn and the surrounding area.

"The promenade will be a safer, more attractive place to spend time once the work is complete and the project is an excellent example of the council working in partnership to deliver social and economic improvements across the borough."

The first phase of the work will install the feature lighting, taking up to four months to complete.

Work on the top promenade is due to start next month and is expected to take up to 11 months to complete.

The funding will also pay for design work on further lighting schemes around Saltburn.

The proposals for the project have been drawn up by consulting local communities and getting specialist advice from the council's development department, Groundwork South Tees and English Heritage.
