THERE was a song in the air as Florence Muncaster celebrated her 100th birthday.

Now a resident at the Lindisfarne Care Home, in Chester-le-Street, Mrs Mun-caster was joined by family and staff at a party.

But as an extra surprise, the home had arranged for a local singer to present a selection of her favourite Al Jolson songs.

Born in Pelton Fell in 1905, Mrs Muncaster has lived all her life in the area.

Her late husband, James, began his working life as a farmer, then moved to the mining industry.

The couple had two children, Colin and Edward, both of whom have been survived by their mother.

Grandson David Muncaster travelled to the home to help his grandmother celebrate her birthday.

He said: "Before coming into full-time care, my grandmother enjoyed helping at Pelton Community Centre and was a keen member of the local over-60s club."

This week Mrs Muncaster happily listened to the music and proudly showed off her card from the Queen.
