A NEW town centre taxi rank is to be opened after councillors unanimously voted in favour of the plan, despite opposition from local traders.

The new rank, which can take up to ten taxis, is to be opened at the southern end of Front Street in Chester-le-Street.

Members of the district council's licensing committee voted in favour of the plan last week.

A number of local businesses had objected to the rank, saying they feared an increase in drink-fuelled vandalism and transport congestion.

However, councillors decided that there was no evidence of similar problems at ranks in neighbouring authorities but have invited the police's crime prevention officer to meet the businesses affected and advise them on security measures. They also took advice from police and transport officials that the effect on bus traffic would be minimal.

Last year, the Chicago Rock Caf opened in the area and there are plans to open a second nightspot in the near future.

Committee chairman Coun Colin Carr said: "We must be sensitive to the needs of all residents and all letters of objection were carefully considered by the committee.

"However, an efficient taxi service is essential for the dispersal of late night revellers from the town centre. By ensuring good quality, well-operated taxi ranks close to late night venues, the council is ensuring minimum disturbance and nuisance to local residents.

"The new rank should not be seen in isolation, but as part of an ongoing development of the town's taxi service."

The council has set up a working group to improve relations with the taxi trade and has appointed a consultant to look at demand and supply of cabs.
