A JURY has been shown a knife allegedly used in an attack in which a woman was bundled off the street and raped.

The lock knife, which the prosecution at Teesside Crown Court say was used by Mamya Baktyar to threaten his victim, was displayed during his trial which yesterday entered its second day.

Mr Baktyar, 24, of Glebe Road, Middlesbrough, denies rape and claims the mother of three was a willing partner to sex, having propositioned him.

Yesterday defence barrister Nigel Soppitt cast doubt on a description of the knife by a prosecution witness as having a six inch long blade.

Cross examining the alleged victim's partner, he claimed the man had pursued and caught up with Mr Baktyar following the attack because he wanted to punish him for not paying for sex.

The jury has already heard the woman deny that she was working as a prostitute on the night of the attack on March 31 last year in order to fund a crack cocaine habit.

Mr Baktyar was arrested by police shortly after he was confronted by the victim and her partner on the night of the incident.

A silver lock knife was later found by officers in Albany Street, Middlesbrough, near the scene of the alleged rape, off Borough Road.

The trial continues.
