INTERNATIONAL opera star Sir Thomas Allen will join east Durham primary school pupils on stage this week for a gala performance of the musical Olympics.

Seaham-born Sir Thomas, whose rich baritone voice is renowned the world over, will be narrator and soloist for the concert written for children by Alan Simmons.

It tells the story of an Olympic Games, with different songs representing different sports.

The concert, to be staged tomorrow evening at Peterlee Leisure Centre, has been arranged by the Durham County Music Support Service. Its staff have been working with pupils and the composer since last September.

The concert itself will feature the Easington District Wind Band and staff from the Music Service.

Tickets for the concert, priced at £3 for adults and £1 for accompanied children, are available from the Kingsway Music Centre, Kingsway, Bishop Auckland or by calling (01388) 608421 or faxing (01388) 663250.

Music Service Support area manager Carolyn Norris said Sir Thomas was keen to perform the concert in his home county.

"We are delighted that a musician of Sir Thomas' calibre is coming to work with children in the area."
