ONE of the largest orchid shows in the North of England takes place at the end of this month at a County Durham castle.

The Raby Castle Orchid Show, at Staindrop, takes place from Saturday, April 30, to Bank Holiday Monday, May 2.

This year, the focus of the show will be hardy outdoor orchids.

Experts will outline how orchids can be grown outside.

As well as the dainty and subtle outdoor orchids, there will be displays of exotic and flamboyant varieties.

The Hardy Orchid Society will be exhibiting at the show for the first time, as well as the North-East of England and Darlington Orchid Societies.

Jac Wubben, one of Europe's leading orchid growers, has also chosen the Raby show as the only one he will exhibit at this year.

He will be bringing more than 75 species of orchids from Holland.

Dr Richard Warren, from Barnard Castle, a leading orchid expert and member of the British Orchid Growers Association, said: "This will be a fantastic display of orchids for the North-East this year, especially with the added attraction of the hardy outdoor orchids that can be grown in any garden.

"As well as showing some of the rare, exotic plants, our aim is to illustrate reliable types of orchids that people can grow on their own window sills or in their gardens."

There will also be lectures and demonstrations throughout the weekend. For details, call (01833) 660202/660888 or visit www.rabycastle.com
