HUNDREDS of protestors took to the streets to make their opposition clear to plans for a housing development at a seaside town.

Property developer Persimmon is planning a £55m project in Redcar, which will see hundreds of new homes built along the seafront.

But the Coatham Enclosure complex has been met with strong opposition. Local protester Chris McGlade, who has been at the forefront of opposition, led Saturday's march.

Mr McGlade, who is standing for MP in Redcar in the forthcoming elections, led the crowd from West Dyke Road to the town clock.

The march also marked the start of a 300-mile walk to Downing Street for Mr McGlade, who will deliver a 9,000 signature petition against the building plan to Number 10.

He said: "The people of Redcar have had enough.

"We want our leisure facilities improved, but we don't want another pile of bricks ruining our landscape."

Redcar and Cleveland Council said the scheme, including 285 houses by Persimmon and a £22m leisure development, was vital for Redcar's future.

Cabinet member for economic development Councillor Vera Moody said: "The money from the new housing is essential to bringing a swimming pool back to Redcar."

Responding to the protest march, Coun Moody said: "No one can fail to be impressed by the turn-out on these numerous marches, but I have to wonder just how many people know what they're marching for."
