Police have quizzed Newcastle United stars Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer following their on-pitch brawl in front of 52,000 fans.

A file is now being sent to the Crown Prosecution Service to decide if either of the players is to face criminal charges.

The Toon stars clashed in the closing stages of the Magpies' home defeat by Aston Villa earlier this month in front of millions of stunned TV viewers.

Northumbria Police said it formally questioned both players on Tuesday and a file would be prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service to decide if any charges would follow.

After the incident, which was broken up by players from both sides, Bowyer and Dyer were red-carded and sent off.

Bowyer, who appeared to approach Dyer ahead of the brawl, was fined a maximum £200,000 by the club, the equivalent of six week's wages.

He was given an automatic three-match ban for the sending off plus a further one match suspension for his second red card of the season.

On Tuesday he admitted an FA charge of violent conduct and will be dealt with by a disciplinary committee at a personal hearing on Friday. Dyer was also banned for three matches for the red card but escaped any punishment from the club.
