CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save one of Darlington's best-known pubs from demolition said that they had received overwhelming support for their cause.

The White Horse Pub and Hotel, in North Road, is facing closure after developers revealed plans to build 64 apartments on the site.

Premier Homes UK is seeking permission from Darlington Borough Council for the development and the matter is expected to come before a planning committee meeting on May 11.

But local residents are battling against the proposals, as is Whessoe parish council.

More than 300 objections are so far understood to have been lodged with the borough authority's planning department.

Hundreds of comments forms have been distributed to homeowners and the www.savethe whitehorse.org website has also had more than 8,000 hits.

The Campaign for Real Ale has also voiced its disapproval at the controversial plans.
