PUB WALKS IN COUNTY DURHAM AND TEESSIDE by Charlie Emett (Countryside Books www.countrysidebooks.co.uk, £5.99)

WALK AROUND HISTORIC Darlington by Charlie Emett (Francis Frith, £5.99)

FORMER walks correspondent of The Northern Echo, Charlie Emett, has published a walking guide with a difference. The book contains 20 circular walks, ranging in length from two-and-a-half to five miles, all based on a good local pub, chosen for its good food and ambience. Numbered sketch maps correspond with the numbers in the route description to help the walker know exactly where he or she is, particularly useful after that long lunch!

WIN A COPY

We have ten copies of Charlie's book to give away. Just tell us the name of the new chancellor of Durham University. (Clue: he's written a number of entertaining books). Answers, by Saturday, on a postcard or the back of an envelope to Walks Book Competition, Features, The Northern Echo, Priestgate, Darlington DL1 1NF.

Charlie's second offering is a walk around Darlington, divided into easy stages, and based on a Victorian Ordnance Survey First Edition map. The booklet is illustrated with evocative photographs from the Francis Frith Collection, packed with period details, which allow the walker/reader to see how much or little the town has changed in the intervening years. Available from Ottakar's (www.ottakars.co.uk).
