A YOUNG scientist from Sedgefield had the right chemistry to win an award in a recent competition.
Jane Larcombe, 13, from Sedgefield, was part of a team of four girls from Teesside High School in Eaglescliffe, which competed in the Salters Festival of Chemistry, held at the Stockton campus of the University of Durham.
Her teammates were Beth Tyrie, 12, from Guisborough, Nirupama Harikumar, 12, from Billingham, and 13-year-old Sarah Braithwaite, from Marton.
In their first challenge, they had to complete a series of chemical tests to identify five unknown substances, in which they scored highly.
During the afternoon - the University Challenge - they had to investigate the densities of liquids. Their work was assessed by judges from the university and from industry.
"Although they were allowed an hour to complete the challenge, they finished in just over ten minutes," said chemistry teacher Sue Swalwell.
The team won the University Challenge, with the girls each receiving a certificate and a calculator, and also earning a cheque for £100 for their school.
