AN important book is going online in Darlington this week, detailing the lives of famous people linked to the town.

Darlington receives 273 mentions in the online Dictionary of National Biography.

Entries include information on the renowned former editor of The Northern Echo, WT Stead, father of the railways Edward Pease and publisher JM Dent.

Darlington libraries have subscribed to the online biography so visitors can log on and find out about the town's historic figures.

The book, which contains 54,000 biographies, can be viewed at the library in Crown Street and at Cockerton library.

People can view the information for the first time on Friday, as part of Local History Month.
