A FEMALE driver remained in a critical condition in hospital last night after her car left the road and hit a lamppost on a busy dual carriageway.

The 49-year-old woman was airlifted to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, following the accident on Wednesday morning on the A19 southbound, near Hartlepool.

Police said the woman was being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit for head injuries, including a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain.

Police said the woman lost control of her silver Daewoo Espero after she was involved in an accident with an MGS Rover that was trying to overtake her.

A Vauxhall Vectra was also involved in the accident, which took place at about 8.25am, about a mile north of Dalton Lodge.

Anyone with information about the accident has been asked to call PC Derek Walton on (01642) 301552.
