A COUNCILLOR with ten years service has taken over as the civic leader for the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire.

Councillor Peter Brown has been a district councillor since 1995, representing Romanby ward in Northallerton.

"This is a most important role, and I want to thank the council for electing me," he said yesterday.

"I will conduct my duties at all times with a very high regard for the importance of this office. All my predecessors have set me a very high standard to follow, but I will do my best."

He thanked the outgoing chairman, Councillor Mrs June Imeson, for her hard work and commitment to the authority.

Councillor Mrs Susan Latter, the ward member for Scruton and a councillor since 1987, was made vice-chairman.

Councillor Brown will be accompanied by his wife, Barbara, during his year of office.
