A GROUP of keen readers are taking part in a national reading initiative.

Pupils from Wolsingham School and Community College will read books shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway best illustrated book, in the Carnegie Medal awards.

The school's book club, the Wolsie Worms, who meet on Monday lunchtimes, will "shadow" the judges by reading all of the books and choosing their favourite.

The students will have a week to read each book and will then share their opinions.

"The shadowing schemes really promote reading within the school and encourage students to try books they previously would not have attempted," said a spokesman for the school.

"The Wolsie Worms have chosen the Greenaway because they wanted to share the books with their families, particularly younger brothers and sisters."

The judges will decide the winner of the Carnegie awards for best illustrated book and best novel on Friday, July 8.
