A NORTH port's two piers are in a poor condition due to generations of battering by the North Sea, say engineers.

As a result, major surveys are to be carried out on the piers, at Whitby, North Yorkshire, by Scarborough Borough Council, at a cost of £280,000.

John Riby, head of engineering for the authority, told the cabinet that the East and West piers were in a relatively poor condition.

Over-topping by the sea and the force of the waves on the structures means they will not last much longer.

Specialist consultants are being brought in to carry bore-hole investigations, a ground-probing radar survey, seismic and condition surveys of the piers both above water line and below it.

Once a detailed scheme is complete, it will be sent to the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs for financial backing.

Councillors were told that unless the work was carried out, there was a risk of the piers being breached by the sea and damaging Whitby harbour
