YOUNG people from a North-East survival group are to explore eastern Romania during an exchange visit.

Nine youngsters and one youth leader from The Pilgrim Club, in Shildon, will embark on their journey in September.

The group will travel to the city of Iasi, in eastern Romania, home of the country's oldest university, to join youngsters from five other countries.

They will all take part in a nine-day Green Youth Project, which will offer them the opportunity to tour the city, see its Botanical Gardens, monasteries and a cultural fair.

They will also plant trees and help to repair a cycle track.

Youth club founder Councillor John Cutting said: "Part of the nine-day visit will be looking at how the Romanian authorities and communities protect their environment.

"This will give the youngsters the opportunity to share experiences and evaluations with so many young people from all over Europe - an adventure in itself."

The exchange was made possible after the Pilgrim Club took part in recent "making contact" seminars at the County Cricket Ground, Chester-le-Street, and the Resthouse, Hackworth Park, Shildon.
