A REMOTE village is home to one of the region's most unlikely des res properties.

While not necessarily fit for a king, the property in Woodland, County Durham, comes equipped with thrones.

The village's public toilets are being sold off by Teesdale District Council, and agents handling the sale have been flooded with inquiries from all over the region. The property consists of two toilets on a site area of just over 1,000ft sq.

The council is inviting offers over £5,000 for the 50-year-old toilets.

However, the toilets can not be used by a first-time buyer desperate for a small starter home.

The council said the site could be used as a domestic garden, and that a domestic garage for a car or motorcycle could be built on it, subject to permission.

For these reasons, the agents were not expecting many inquiries from outside the village.

However, only three inquiries have been made by Woodland residents, with many more from outside the area.

The popularity of the public conveniences has left staff at the agents, Carvers, delighted.

Jane Medcalf, from Carvers, said: "Because it is quite specialised, we were expecting a couple of people from Woodland to inquire. But we've had inquiries from Stockton, Darlington, Heighington, Shildon; all over.

"We have been very surprised at the interest we have had.

"We've sent the details out to 14 people from all over. We have never had to sell toilets before, but we will sell anything."

Teesdale District Council closed the toilets just over a year ago to save money. The deadline for offers is noon next Friday.
