PARALYMPIC Dame Tanni Grey Thompson is asking people to give disabled people a chance to prove themselves.

The medal-winning athlete was one of the guests at the opening, last week, of a £1.2m flagship centre in Middlesbrough for the Shaw Trust, the employment charity for disabled and disadvantaged people.

Dame Tanni said: "There is a perception that people with disabilities don't want to work. Yes, it would be nice to win the Lottery, however, for most of us, that isn't a reality.

"It is important that disabled people are given the same choices as everyone else. Shaw Trust is an organisation that believes anyone who wants to work should be given the chance to do just that."

The charity's new base aims to provide job support to 3,000 disabled and disadvantaged people in the Teesside area each year.
