A FESTIVAL held to celebrate an ancient monument was an overwhelming success, organisers said yesterday.
Thornborough Free Festival took place in Masham on Saturday. The event featured more than 40 music acts, street performers and artists at seven venues throughout the town.
It was organised by environmental campaigners fighting plans by Tarmac to extend Nosterfield Quarry, which lies alongside the 5,000-year-old Thornborough Henges. Tarmac had an information desk at the festival.
The henges are described by English Heritage as the most important ancient site between Stonehenge and the Orkneys.
Saturday's festival was backed by TimeWatch, the group campaigning against the proposed extension at Nosterfield.
Chairman George Chaplin said more than 1,500 people attended the event.
"As far as I can see, the event itself was a total and overwhelming success. We were very, very happy with it," he said.
He said the organisers were hoping to hold the event again in the future, but the details would be discussed at a meeting in the next few weeks.
