AN artist who has turned his unique style to Durham landmarks is to exhibit in the city.

The city centre, with the cathedral and castle, has inspired thousands of traditional painters over the years, but John Coatsworth paints what he calls "bendy" buildings.

He developed the style while depicting sights in his native Newcastle, such as the Quayside and Millennium Bridge.

In the autumn, he is to display 20 paintings at the Mable and Isaac Gallery, on the corner of Millennium Place and Claypath in the city.

His work captivated Julie McLoughlin, who opened the gallery in February, and at her request he started working on Durham paintings.

Mr Coatsworth, whose work is already on sale at the shop, said: "I was nicknamed the bendy man. People say my style is whacky.

"I try to create an atmosphere. I used to do traditional painting and started doing this about eight years ago."
