A NEW star of India has arrived in Darlington in the form of the Radhuni restaurant.

Forget the embossed wallpaper and tables tucked in dingy alcoves common in many Indian restaurants. Radhuni, in Parkgate, next to the Civic Theatre, has the ambience of an up-market bistro, with sparkling tiled floors, crisp white decor and lighting which reflects the quality fixtures, fittings and furniture which engender a contemporary yet welcoming ambience.

Diners eat using cutlery and crockery brought from India and individually selected by owner Mohammed, for whom Radhuni is the jewel in the crown of the group of restaurants he runs throughout the region.

The superb surroundings would mean nothing if the menu didn't match the setting, but lovers of Indian cuisine are in for a mouthwatering treat.

All the old favourites are there but the more adventurous diner will test the skills of Mohammed's experienced chef, who will not be found wanting.

A full page of the menu is dedicated to intriguing chef's specials - an array of lamb, chicken and prawn dishes prepared in authentic style.

Alternatively, choose a succulent dish from the tandoori specialities, be brave enough to risk a chilli-hot Duck Jalfreizi, or dip into the seafood offerings - everything from Kakrah Kufta, succulent white crab blended in a bhuna sauce, or Macheyr Jhul, a salmon-based traditional fish curry.

If customers wish to modify any dish, or even create a one-off meal, staff will be happy to help, while innovative design means diners can watch their food being prepared in the open-plan kitchen at the rear of the restaurant.

A range of Indian and other world-famous lagers, beers and fine wines complete the Radhuni experience.

"We want all our customers to leave having not only enjoyed a superb mean but having had a taste of the essence of India and Bangladesh," said Mohammed.

Radhuni, which was officially opened by The Northern Echo's renowned food critic, Mike Amos, at a gala evening for invited guests, also offers takeaway and outside catering services.

It is open noon to 2pm and 5pm to midnight Monday to Saturday, and 5pm to midnight on Sundays.
