THE BBC last night faced calls to re-instate a North Yorkshire seaside resort to its regional weather map following complaints that it had disappeared.

Members of the public complained that a new map being used by BBC Look North omitted Scarborough and resorts further south such as Filey - which were included on the map before a recent revamp.

Brian Milnes, from Stockton, said: "The map misses off a large part of the south of the region taking in Scarborough and the coastal area. Cutting off the edge of the screen when Scarborough is part of their area is outrageous - they should damn well cover it properly.

"Lots of people on Teesside want to know what the weather is like in that area because they go there on their holidays.

"The BBC say they cannot do anything about it, because it is dictated to them by London.

"This is a crazy bit of Londonism and anti-regionalism and quite ridiculous."

David Jeffels, cabinet member for tourism and leisure at Scarborough Borough Council, said: "Scarborough and Filey draw a lot on holidaymakers from the North-East and traditionally always have done.

"We rely an awful lot on the forecast, and it can be absolutely critical, because when it is good, people often want to jump in their cars and head down to the coast.

"An omission like this could cost businesses in Scarborough tens of thousands of pounds and it is something we will be taking up with the BBC."

Last month, the corporation changed its new 3D national weather map after complaints from viewers that it focused too much on the south and made the North of England and Scotland look smaller.

A spokesman for the BBC said it was looking into the latest complaints.
