PASTEL artist Elizabeth Smith, of Ingleby Arncliffe, has been given her first major exhibition in this area with the opening of Inspired by Nature at Beningbrough Hall, near York.

Though the two-day exhibition in the village hall at Swainby, which she organises herself, is an annual must for fans of her work in the locality where she lives, until now the only galleries to give her wall space have been in other parts of the country.

Inspired by Nature features nearly 50 landscape, marine and still-life pictures that celebrate the beauty of nature in harmony with man-made artefacts.

Mrs Smith is an elected member and officer of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, a group of about 45 artists who share a love of the sea, and regularly exhibits at the society's home, the Mall Galleries in London.

She also shows with the Pastel Society, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and a number of commercial galleries throughout the country.

The Beningbrough exhibition continues until August 3
