Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy is expected to make a third offer for Wolves striker Kenny Miller this week after another forward, Ricardo Fuller, failed a weekend medical on Wearside, writes Scott Wilson.

The Black Cats agreed a deal with Portsmouth at the end of last week that would have seen Fuller move to the Stadium of Light on a pay-as-you-play basis.

But the Jamaica international, who has a history of serious knee problems, failed a medical after travelling to Sunderland on Saturday.

"Everyone knows he has a knee problem and Sunderland knew that in advance," revealed an exasperated Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie. "It is surprising that this has happened after Sunderland knew the facts anyway.

"His knee might need an operation at some stage, but it could be next week or it could be in the next five years. Everyone knew that was the case."

McCarthy is now poised to renew his attempts to sign Miller despite having had two earlier bids, believed to be of £1m and £1.25m, turned down.

Miller is due to fly to Spain with the rest of the Wolves squad later today, where he will hold showdown talks with boss Glenn Hoddle about his future.

The Scotland international is ready to tell Hoddle he does not want to spend another season in the Championship, paving the way for a likely £1.5m move to the Stadium of Light.
