A COASTAL town's adopted ship is to pay a visit later this month, as part of an annual nautical celebration.

The RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) Wave Ruler will be at Scarborough, from July 20 to 26, as part of Seafest.

The visit will also coincide with the arrival of the Tall Ships in Whitby and forms part of a UK-wide tour by Wave Ruler to celebrate the RFA centenary.

Members of the public will be able to step on board and see the ship at close quarters, on July 23.

Seafest celebrates all things nautical and takes place from July 22 to 24. It will include a wide range of music and street entertainment, a fireworks display and seafood cookery demonstrations.

John Trebble, chief executive of Scarborough Borough Council, said: "Scarborough has a long association with the Royal Navy, going back many years, so we are honoured and very pleased to welcome Wave Ruler to our waters once again.

"Wave Ruler's visit, coupled with the exciting programme planned for Seafest, and what promises to be the breathtaking arrival of the Tall Ships in Whitby, will be an excellent opportunity to celebrate our maritime history and I'm sure will attract visitors from far and wide."
