A BABY girl who was knocked from her pushchair in a freak three-car accident died of natural causes two days later, a post mortem examination has revealed.

The examination of 13-day-old Ellie Walls, of Kirkstone, Houghton-le-Spring, Wearside, was carried out by a pathologist yesterday.

Ellie died after experiencing breathing difficulties on Monday morning. She was rushed to Sunderland Royal Hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.

Her parents, Melanie Walls and Terry Riley, are said to be devastated.

Yesterday, they were being comforted by friends and relatives and asked for their privacy to be res- pected.

The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned this week, pending further inquiries.

The police investigation into Ellie's death has been completed and officers are satisfied it had nothing to do with the crash, which happened on Saturday at 12.50pm.

Ellie was uninjured when her pushchair was knocked over after two cars collided 100 yards from her home in Queensway.

It is believed she was being looked after by her mother's cousin, Sharon Smith, while her parents attended a wedding.

Norman Turton, who lives opposite Ms Smith, was reversing his Vauxhall Astra estate into the street.

He said his car was then in collision with a Fiat Punto, driven by a young woman, who lost control and ran into the buggy, knocking it over.

Mr Turton, 63, a painter and decorator, said the Punto then hit a garden fence and collided with a Mini Cooper.

Police are investigating the accident and have asked anyone with information to call 0191-454 7555 ext 66930.
