THE man behind a multi-million pound movie set in the North-East yesterday hit back at reports it was a hoax, claiming it was "one hundred per cent" still on and involved a team of A-list Hollywood celebrities.

Shooting of the £2.5m Addict movie, based on the autobiography of reformed drug addict Stephen Smith, was originally due to start in Darlington today, but has been delayed several times.

There have also been rumours of location and casting problems, and speculation the film would not go ahead.

The latest delay has been blamed on Mr Smith's "severe back problems". Filming has not been rescheduled, but producers said it would be soon.

Yesterday, Mr Smith insisted the project would still go ahead, and that Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp was on the verge of agreeing to appear. Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis has been signed up to direct the movie, and he also said legendary director Martin Scorcese could become involved.

Speaking to The Northern Echo, Mr Smith said he was hurt by speculation about the movie.

"I got a bit upset by people thinking I was having them on," he said. "Why would we want to do that?

"I hurt my back very badly and have been in hospital for a few days, and am only starting now to get back in circulation. That's why filming hasn't started."

Mr Smith, 62, said he was still excited about the movie, and that some "amazing" names would be taking part.

"I'm disappointed Johnny Depp hasn't signed up yet, but I know in my heart of hearts he'll do it," he said. "And if we get him - which I'm confident we will - then we will try for Scorcese. I want this to be big."

He added: "This is one hundred per cent still on. People will soon see this is right."
