CHILDREN’S author Terry Deary aims to get people running down memory lane to help sick children.

The award-winning Horrible Histories writer is urging people to try to Beat the Beamish Tram.

The challenge will take place on Sunday, June 27, with a 2.4km fun run – open to all ages – and a 10km multi-terrain race.

Both races involve runners trying to beat one of the museum’s historic trams around the track.

Yesterday, Mr Deary was joined at the museum’s Edwardian Town Street for the launch by children from Beamish Primary School.

He said: “Last year, I did the 2.4km run and the multi-terrain run, which was hard work, but this year I am determined to beat the tram. If I really push myself, I can get close to it.”

For the first time ever, competitors are encouraged to run in fancy dress with the theme of Historic Figures from the Past.

Money from this year’s challenge goes towards the Grace House North-East Children’s Hospice Appeal, which will be built in Sunderland. Entry forms can be downloaded at beamish.org.uk or by contacting Suzanne Battersby on 0191-370-4054, email suzannebattersby@beamish.org.uk. There is a limit of 250 entrants for each race.
