NEWCASTLE United footballer Andy Carroll appeared in court today charged with assault after an incident at a nightclub.

The England Under-21 striker is accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Michael Cook, who plays for Crook Town, after an incident in the Blu Bambu club in Newcastle's Bigg Market in December.

It is alleged that Mr Carroll smashed a glass into Mr Cook's face.

Mr Carroll, 21, of Carr Road, Prestwick, Newcastle, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address during a brief hearing at Newcastle Magistrates Court.

JPs said that because of the seriousness of the charge, it could only be dealt with in the crown court.

The hearing was adjourned until April 29 when the matter will be committed to Newcastle Crown Court. Mr Carroll was released on conditional bail.

Following Newcastle's relegation from the Premier League, Mr Carroll has been a regular this season as the club looks to return to the top flight at the first attempt.

The 21-year-old has scored eight goals in 20 matches for top-of-the-table Newcastle this season.
