RARE stamps with former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s signature on them have been found during a clear-out of his old constituency home.

Mr Blair’s former agent, John Burton, found two first day covers as he was clearing out Myrobella House, in Trimdon Colliery, County Durham.

Mr Burton said he was sent the stamps by Jennifer Nestasi, who wanted Mr Blair’s signature on them to give them to her two sons.

However, either the stamped addressed envelope was not included or has been lost and Mr Burton has no way of returning them.

The first-day covers also bear the signatures of Margaret Thatcher, Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, and a third person Mr Burton cannot make out.

He said: “This lady has obviously gone to some trouble to get these things signed and I would like to give her them back. We used to get requests for signed photographs and things all the time and it was never a problem.

“They were found in a filing cabinet with a couple of other bits and pieces.”

Myrobella was Mr Blair’s Sedgefield constituency home from 1983 when he entered Parliament until 2007 when he stepped down as PM.

Although it has spent the last two years as the base for the Tony Blair Sports Foundation, there is still evidence of its illustrious past.

A brick building contains a communications facility owned by the Home Office, but a more subtle clue comes from another find.

Mr Burton said: “Most of the stuff has gone, but I did find an old badge with Tony’s picture on it, in the old green and white Labour colours, which must date right back to 1983 when he was campaigning.”

The foundation has moved to larger premises, in Newcastle, and the property was sold to Paul Enisz, 48, a scaffolder, and his wife, Tracey, 43, an occupational health therapist, earlier this month.

Mr Burton said: “It was nice in a way that the house is going to a family to be used as a home because it’s a lovely house to be used as a home and indeed that’s what Tony used it for, a family home.”
