FEARS are again being voiced for the future of a major event in the region’s horseracing calendar.

The Middleham Stables Open Day, always staged on Good Friday, has been highly successful over the past two decades.

Last year, the event, which is sponsored by The Northern Echo, attracted more than 7,000 people and raised more than £16,000 for local charities, despite rain and overcast skies.

But fears, first voiced and then dismissed 12 months ago, that racing could be introduced on Good Friday have now resurfaced, putting the open day’s future in jeopardy.

The religious holiday is one of only two days a year when there is no racing, leaving stables free to take part in the open day, allowing members of the public the chance to see how stables work.

If the British Horesracing Authority (BHA) introduces meetings on Good Friday next year, this year’s Middleham event could be the last.

Event spokesman Robert Beaumont said: “They have thought about it before, but this time I think it is serious, “The loss of the open day would be a desperate blow for Middleham, as it raises thousands of pounds for local charities, as well as putting the town on the map.

“If this is to be the last open day, then I urge everyone who loves racing in Yorkshire – and beyond – to come and support us.”

The Middleham Key Centre is co-ordinating the event. Spokeswoman Judith Brickwood said: “It would be a great shame if there were to be no more open days, as the event benefits businesses in the town as well as raising large amounts for charity.”

A spokesman for the BHA confirmed Good Friday racing for next year was under consideration and that a decision was likely in March.

He said: “Reaching a position on Good Friday will involve undertaking consultation with those affected, such as the horsemen, racecourses, the Levy Board and Racing Enterprises Limited.

“The value and role of the open days will obviously be a major consideration in these discussions.”

At least 15 trainers will take part in this year’s event, on April 2. There will also be a country fair, an art exhibition, trade stands and market stalls.

The yards will be open from 9.30am to 1pm. Free parking is available in Middleham or nearby Leyburn, with bus links between car parks and the outlying stables. Admission is £6 in advance for adults or £7 at the gate. Children under 12 are admitted free. Call 01969-624411.

Wensleydale Railway will run an early train from Leeming Bar to Leyburn for the open day. Buses will then run to Middleham.
