DOZENS of rail enthusiasts turned out today to see the first new mainline steam locomotive to be built in Britain in almost 50 years travel on an iconic route.
Tornado, the Darlington-built Peppercorn A1 Pacific, with her passenger train The Waverley, set out this morning from Doncaster to travel the 72-mile Settle to Carlisle line.
It picked up passengers at York before arriving at Leeds train station just after 10.30am.
Mark Allatt, chairman of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, said Tornados' journey through Yorkshire to Cumbria has met with massive support.
He added: "The sight of Tornado crossing the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct is something our many supporters have dreamed of for almost 20 years."
