THE long-necked world of giraffes has been made the subject of a new exhibition.

Durham artist and author Ingrid Sylvestre has brought her creations to the Durham Town Hall foyer in a show called Giraffes Come Home to Durham.

Seven years ago, Ms Sylvestre painted one of her first and most popular pictures, called Durham Goes Giraffe.

The scene features the town hall and other market place landmarks, including the statue of Lord Londonderry, whose horse has mysteriously turned into a giraffe.

She also painted Durham Goes Giraffe at Christmas.

“The original paintings sold years ago, and the images are still some of my best sellers as greeting cards and prints,” she said.

“In the early years, they would quickly sell-out at Durham’s craft fairs, which used to be held in the town hall.”

Since then she has written and illustrated books, stories and animation and composed music about giraffes.

The exhibition will be at the town hall until October 31.
