A GROUP of canoeists are raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance.

The team of 14, plus five standby members, from the Bishop Auckland area and Teesside, will canoe 40 miles down the River Tyne, from Haydon Bridge, in Northumberland, to Tynemouth on October 17 and 18.

They plan to stay in Hexham overnight halfway through their journey, and will hit the town with donation buckets that night.

The group, aged from 23 to 49, have previously raised money for charities by climbing Ben Nevis, and canoeing on Loch Ness, in Scotland.

David Baglin, who organises the events with his brother, Mark, said: “We try to do something every year. We always have an excellent weekend and like to raise money for some good causes.”
