PEOPLE poured through the gates yesterday for the first day of a food festival.

The second annual Darlington Food Festival was launched with a Chinese lion dance.

The live entertainment was among the attractions at the event, which is run to celebrate British Food Fortnight. An array of foods, many from the region, as well as Italian and Caribbean fare, were on offer.

As well as the main tent, stalls served hot food to customers.

The event is in the market place today and tomorrow.

Demonstrations will be given by students and celebrity chefs.

Today, David Hall, a finalist from BBC’s Masterchef Goes Large, will be at the festival.

Tomorrow will be the turn of Paul Rankin, a regular from BBC’s Ready Steady Cook and Saturday Kitchen.

It is expected the event will attract a record attendance of more than 40,000 people over the three days.

A three-day pass is £3 for adults and free for children under 16 who are accompanied by an adult.
