SPANIARD Manuel Angel Jiminez holds a one shot lead after the opening round of The Open Championship.

Jiminez carded a six-under-par round of 64 to open up a one shot lead over former champions Tom Watson and Ben Curtis.

The 45-year-old, who has never won a Major title, recorded successive birdies on the final two holes to claim the outright lead at Turnberry.

Veteran Watson is a shot further back after rolling back the years to evoke the memories of his 1977 Turnberry triumph over Jack Nicklaus.

The 59-year-old, who is due to make his final Open appearance at St Andrew's in 12 months time, finished at five under par, alongside Curtis, who claimed a shock Open victory at Royal St George's in 2003.

Stewart Cink and Camilo Villegas are in a group of five players on four under, while Vijay Singh and Mike Weir are a shot further back on three under.

World number one Tiger Woods posted a disappointing one-over-par round of 71, and Hartlepool's Graeme Storm will do well to make the cut after finishing on 72.
