PUPILS and staff at a North Yorkshire school have celebrated the opening of a new extension by creating a handmade mosaic to decorate the space.
The extension to Great Smeaton School has created a new entrance hall and extra teaching areas that allow children to work one-to-one with staff, something that previously had to take place in a corridor.
Each child at the school contributed to a welcome mosaic which will be hung to frame the new entrance.
The grand opening also included a picnic lunch to celebrate the retirement of Mrs Thurland, who has taught at the school for 23 years, and the school sports day.
The funding for the new addition to the school was raised by the Friends of Great Smeaton School, known as the FROGS, who held fundraising activities such as the annual black-tie summer ball.
The fundraisers were also helped by one of the parent governors, Dr Richard Hixon, who ran the London marathon in 2008, raising £7,000.
