CHURCH leaders have expressed their sadness at the disappearance of university chef Claudia Lawrence.

Members of the General Synod have been meeting at York University, where 35-year-old Miss Lawrence works as a chef at Goodricke College.

Martin Dales, a member of the Synod, said: "Claudia was well-known to both Church of England staff and members of General Synod alike with her ever-smiling face.

"Many people from all over England have been coming up to me saying how sad it is that Claudia has disappeared and that they and their churches are praying for her safe return."

Mr Dales is a friend of Miss Lawrence’s father Peter and has been acting as his spokesman since his daughter disappeared in March.

More than 400 bishops, clergy and lay-people constitute the General Synod which has representatives from all 44 dioceses across the Church of England including the Diocese in Europe.

Mr Dales added: "It is comforting to know that the prayers of so many people are with Claudia and her family and I know they feel very supported in their ongoing distress."

Miss Lawrence has not been seen since March 18 and police are now treating the case as one of suspected murder.
