VISITORS to the Great Yorkshire Show have been urged to leave their cars at home when they travel to the event in a bid to reduce congestion and queues.

The 151-year-old show, which starts tomorrow, attracts more than 120,000 people over three days each year and is notorious for traffic problems in and around the site.

The Highways Agency has asked people planning to visit to think about car-sharing or using public transport to reach Harrogate showground, so that people can have a ‘stress-free day’.

The agency has also asked people to ensure they are prepared if they do choose to drive to the event.

The agency's operations manager Guy Huckle said: "If it's not possible to leave your car at home, make sure it is fit for the journey with plenty of coolant and fuel, and in case of hot weather we would also advise people to pack water for their journey."

To help people make a car-free journey, shuttle buses will run to and from Harrogate Bus Station and Hornbeam Park Railway Station, and there will be secure bicycle parking at the showground.
