A CELEBRATION was held to mark 60 years of nurse training at the Friarage Hospital, in Northallerton.

More than 120 Friarage trained nurses came from as far afield as Australia to remember their days as junior nurses at the special lunch, organised by The Nurses League.

One of the visitors to the lunch, Jean Clarke, started her training in 1949, the first year of nurse training at the Friarage and was one of the first to graduate from the programme.

The lunch, held in the nurses recreation hall at the hospital, included photographs and memorabilia of the 60 years of student nursing.

Also present were South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust chairman, Deborah Jenkins, and the director of nursing and patient safety, infection prevention and control, Tricia Hart, who emphasised the trust’s commitment to the continuation of nursing developments of the Friarage Hospital, including the training of student nurses.

Eva Shuttleworth, president of The Nurses League, said: "It certainly makes me proud to be the president of an organisation where there is so much interest and comradeship amongst nursing staff past and present."
