RESIDENTS in Redcar are set to receive an improved gas supply thanks to a £780,000 investment by Northern Gas Networks.

Work is already underway to upgrade the gas mains in the residential area of Dormanstown.

The project will benefit Duncan Avenue, Sandsend Road, Kirkleatham Lane, Staintondale Avenue, Commondale Grove, Baysdale Grove, Kettleness Avenue, Baysdale Avenue, Stockdale Avenue, Bransdale Grove, Wheeldale Avenue, Danby Avenue, Eskdale Road, Benison Crescent, Hardale Grove, Runswick Avenue, Hinderwell Avenue, Boulby Road, Grinkle Road and Adshead Road.

The work is being carried out by United Utilities and Balfour Beatty on behalf of the region’s gas pipeline owner Northern Gas Networks and is expected to take approximately five months to complete.

In total, 6.7km of old metal mains will be replaced with modern plastic pipe to ensure the safety and reliability of gas supplies in the area for decades to come.

Northern Gas Networks director, Chris Gorman, said: "We will do everything we can to minimise any disruption. This year Northern Gas Networks will invest £82 million renewing gas mains to ensure that our system remains one of the safest in the world.

"The good news is that we will be using up to date technology to reduce the amount of excavations needed and our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and have a lifespan of at least 80 years."
