TWO men were saved from drowning at a North-East beach over the weekend.

They were spotted in difficulty after jumping off Roker Pier in Sunderland at around 4pm on Saturday.

An RNLI Lifeguard ran along Roker Pier while a second left from the beach after seeing them in the harbour.

One was helped from the water using a rescue board, while the other lifeguard used a rescue tube to prevent the other man from going under the water.

A lifeboat was launched and both men were brought to the beach safely.

Jon Pollock, a crewman at Sunderland RNLI Station, said: "The man was transferred to the waiting ambulance complaining of cramping pains in the legs which prevented him from swimming.

"The pair had been drinking prior to the incident and had already been advised not to enter the water previously by lifeguards."

Beach supervisor urged people not to swim after drinking alcohol.

He said: "The RNLI strongly recommends that people do not enter the in water after drinking alcohol."
