COMMONWEALTH Games international Nick McCormick hopes to turn the clock back four years when he races over 1,500m in Birmingham tomorrow, writes FRANK JOHNSON.

But while the 27-year-old Morpeth Harrier is looking to cross the line first, he has his sights set on winning 5,000m selection for the World Championships.

It will be McCormick’s first test over the metric mile this year and he is using the races to hone up his speed for a do-or-die attempt to catch the selectors’ attention when he runs over 5,000m at Crystal Palace on July 24-25.

McCormick explained: “I’m not chasing a place at 1500m in Birmingham – I’m hoping to gain as much speed as possible out of the competition as possible in preparation for Crystal Palace. But it would be nice to get my name on the trophy again.”

■ Durham’s Philip Hurst won the senior boys’ 3,000m bronze medal on the opening day of the English Schools Championships in Sheffield yesterday in a time of 8 mins 27.35 secs.

Cleveland’s Russell Best (8:35.69) was fourth in an event won by Cumbria’s Tom Farrell in 8:25.02.
