Ryedale MP John Greenway is recovering in London after surgery to remove a tumour on his left thigh at the specialist cancer hospital, the Royal Marsden.

A spokeswoman for Mr Greenway said the surgery had been successful, with the tumour completely removed and a doctors hopeful that there was no secondary cancer.

Mr Greenway, 63, said he would start dealing with correspondence and other paperwork as soon as possible, and hoped to be back in the Commons chamber within a fortnight.

Mr Greenway, who was revealed to have claimed £500 for flowers in the recent expenses scandals, has already announced his intention to stand down at the next election.
