A MAN was found with serious head and facial injuries after he was attacked.

The 55-year-old was found at his home in Devonshire Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, at 7am on Saturday morning.

Cleveland Police said they believe the assault happened in or near the man's home.

The victim was taken to James Cook University Hospital where his condition was serious, but stable.

Detective Inspector Paul Richardson said: "We are confident that this gentleman's injuries came as a result of an assault. We believe it took place in or near his address in Linthorpe.

"I would urge anyone who was in the area between 5.30am and 7am, who saw anything untoward or may have information relating to the incident, to get in touch with police."

Forensic officers carried out a detailed search of the victims home as well as the area surrounding. Door-to-door enquiries were also being carried out throughout yesterday (SUN).

Local people have described the man, who has not been named by police, as well known in the area.

Neighbour Brian Taylor said: "I really hope they catch who did this, its not on at all. I know he could be a nuisance sometimes, but no-one deserves to be attacked like that. He was well known by many people in the area, so hopefully the police will be able to find out what happened to him."

Mary Hennessy, who lives near the victims home, said: "I didn't know him personally, but everyone around here knew who he was. It doesn't matter what type of person he his, he didn't deserve that to happen to him."

Officers have not been able to interview the victim yet as he has yet to regain consciousness.

The victim was known to take early morning walks around the Linthorpe area and police are hoping that someone may have seen him prior to the attack.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the attack is asked to call Middlesbrough CID on 01642-303126.
