15 year 10 Travel and Tourism BTEC Students from Parkside Sports College were occupied with thoughts of summer holidays when they attended ‘The Workplace’ in Newton Aycliffe to experience a promotion and advertising day for the travel industry.

The day was hosted by trainee teachers at Durham SCITT . Durham Secondary Applied SCITT offers the graduate teachers the opportunity to train to teach vocational subjects to the 14 - 19 age range and Mathematics to the 11 - 16 age range. The SCITT has been created through a partnership of the majority of secondary schools in County Durham, and it enjoys great support from the Local Authority and from the Learning and Skills Council.

Parkside students were given the task of completing a piece of promotional material for the travel industry which fitted perfectly into their BTEC portfolio work. Students had to design and create their own T shirt which reflected a specific target market in which to promote their holiday.

Andrew Williams, Assistant Headteacher at Parkside said “The students submerged themselves in the task and created some fantastic t-shirts which promoted their holiday choice. There was a holiday atmosphere throughout the day with starfish, sharks and turtles everywhere”.

All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day. They were congratulated on their outstanding behaviour and enthusiastic approach throughout the day.

Pippa Jenkinson, Director of SCITT said, ” I was impressed with the talent the group had and would welcome Parkside pupils back at anytime as they are a credit to the school For more information contact Claire Young at Parkside Sports College, telephone 01388 746396 or email c.young104@durhamlearning.net
