PEOPLE are being urged to get on their bike and join hundreds of others in pedalling through the North-East countryside.

The third Durham Big Ride – the biggest mass participation cycle ride in the North- East – was launched yesterday and organisers are confident the event will keep on growing.

Last year, nearly 1,000 people got on their bikes to see the best of the Durham countryside.

And organisers are hoping this year will see even more people getting on their bikes.

Organiser Colin Wilkes said: “Despite the awful weather last year the riders came out and made it a great success. With a nice dry summer we are hoping for around 1,400 people on the three routes on September 6.

“The rides are ideal for people to want a bit of fun and exercise at the same time, while raising money for charity.

“The distance of the routes – three miles, ten miles and 25 miles – cater for all ages and abilities.”

He said: “The ethos behind the day is to get lots of people on cycles as a way of getting fit and healthy. We don’t mind which ride people decide to do, it is important that they get out and do it.”

The ride has also seen local and national charities making good use of the event by raising their profile and funds – and having a great time into the bargain.

The event will end with a family fun day with entertainment in the County Hall car park, including the wellknown stunt cyclist Jez Avery, a falconry display, face painting and much more.

As in previous years, there will be no official timing on any of the routes, but all finishers will receive T-shirts and medals. The big ride starts at 9am on Sunday, September 6.
